Abstract

"This paper examines the value a superstar football player brings to a franchise in the National Football League (NFL) during seasons in the 2011 through 2019 timeframe. A directed acyclic graph (DAG) was used as the model for this research to show the variable linkages that help prove or disprove the effect of having multiple superstars on an NFL team’s roster. The main independent variable was superstars who are defined by a yearly salary threshold of $5 million dollars. Five dependent variables were created which described the on-field and financial successes an NFL team experiences during a season. The main on-field variable is team success, which is defined by two sub-variables, regular season winning percentage and playoff appearance percentage. The three financial variables defined are total regular season home attendance, average regular season home ticket price, and total local revenue. Data for all variables was gathered using a variety of North American professional sports databases that contain the statistics for all variables for the time period of interest. It is found that superstars do not provide value to either of the on-field variables defined but do offer substantial value to the financial variables.
